What is this?

We are moving data from one Slack workspace to another — merging messages, channels, and members into a single workspace. This is for Free, Pro, and Business+ plans (not Enterprise).

Who Can Use This?

  • Free, Pro, and Business+ workspaces
  • Only Workspace Owners can run the import

What Data Moves Over?

Plan Data Included
On all plans (Public Channels only):
  • Public channel messages
  • Links to files shared in public channels
  • Member profile information
On Business+ plan (Everything):
  • Public + Private channels
  • Direct Messages (DMs)
  • All file links
  • Member profile information

Step 1 — Export Data from Old Workspace (Admin handles this)

Admin downloads all data from the old (smaller) workspace.

This gives a zip file with all messages, channels, and member info.

Step 2 — Upload the Export File to New Workspace (Admin handles this)

Admin uploads the zip file to the new (larger) workspace.

You'll get an email confirmation once upload is done.

Step 3 — Members Are Matched (Admin handles this)

Here's what happens to different types of users:

User Type What Happens
Same email in both workspaces Accounts get merged
Active user, no matching email Only their messages are imported
Deactivated user, no matching email Imported as deactivated
Guest users Imported as deactivated, then reactivated manually

Step 4 — Channels Are Matched (Admin handles this)

Here's what happens to channels:

Channel Type What Happens
Same name exists in new workspace Merged together
Public channel, no matching name New public channel created
Private channel, no matching name New private channel created
Archived channels Not imported by default

Step 5 — Import Runs

Admin reviews everything
Clicks Import
A progress bar shows the status
You'll get an email when it's done
During import — don't make changes to channels or user accounts

What You (Sales Team) Need to Do

Before import

Nothing. Just be aware it's happening.

After import

  • Log in to the new workspace as usual
  • Check your messages, channels, and DMs
  • Update your profile if anything looks off
  • Guests — you may need to re-accept an invite

Important Notes

  • This does NOT work for Enterprise orgs
  • Private channels cannot be merged into existing private channels — a new one will be created
  • The import can be reversed if something goes wrong (but members added won't be removed)
  • Timeline can range from a few days to months — plan well in advance
